What an audit means, what it does not, and what “verified” means on this site

An external audit is a reading of one version of the code by people who did not write it. What that buys you, what it cannot, what “verified” means on every page here — a number beside the command that recomputes it — and how to read the page that answers the audit question directly.

English — An external audit is a reading of one version of the code by people who did not write it. What that buys you, what it cannot, what “verified” means on every page here — a number beside the command that recomputes it — and how to read the page that answers the audit question directly.

An external audit is a review of a specific version of a program’s source code by a firm or a group of people who did not write it. They read it, they try to break it, and they publish a report listing what they found. That is a valuable thing. It is also a narrower thing than the word usually implies, and this page helps you read the word “audit” without either trusting it too much or dismissing it.

What an audit is not

What “verified” means here

On this site a claim is called verified when it is printed beside the command that recomputes it, and beside the denominator it was measured against. A denominator is the “out of how many” in a fraction: 268 mutants killed means little on its own; 268 of 268 means the suite noticed every one of the deliberate breaks in a named list, and the list is public. That is a different kind of statement from an audit report: it does not ask you to trust the reader, because you can be the reader.

The verification report the engineering pages rest on is written to be checked rather than believed. Every number in it comes from a script or a forge command that runs from a clean copy of the repository, and where a number is a floor — a lowest value, not a full answer — the report calls it a floor. Where an instrument cannot see something, that is stated in the report rather than left out.

How to read the audit page

The page /is-blazephoenix-audited answers the audit question directly and is the only place on this site that should. Read it for three things: which version of the code any external review applies to, what that review is and is not, and what stands in its place where none is claimed. This article does not claim an external audit, and the rule the whole site follows is simple: never claim an audit that has not happened.

One fact that page and this one share, because it decides everything else: the contracts the verification report measures are V2, and V2 is not deployed. The deployed generation is V1, pinned by its code hash on every network so the two are never confused. A statement about the V2 test suite is a statement about a repository, not about a contract you are trading against today.

The habit to take away

Ask two questions of any safety claim, anywhere. Out of how many? And what would I run to check it? A claim that answers both is verified in the sense this site uses. A claim that answers neither is a sentence, and a sentence is not a measurement.

Writing an answer, a wiki entry or a paper? The claim above is reproducible against the chain before you quote it — which is the only sound basis for citing a technical source at all.

Contracts are verified on every chain we deploy to — addresses in the protocol manifest. Deeper formal treatment: the whitepaper (PDF).
